Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan Outlines Crypto Reset and Predicts $250,000 Bitcoin Top

Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan believes the cryptocurrency market is undergoing a fundamental reset, transitioning toward a revenue-driven model grounded in real-world utility. Speaking on market cycles, Hougan pointed to key bottoming signals for Bitcoin, including the clearing of speculative leverage and the market's resilience against negative news. He projected that Bitcoin could reach between $250,000 and $400,000 during the next bull market peak, driven by accelerating capital inflows from major wealth management institutions like UBS, Wells Fargo, and Merrill Lynch.

Beyond Bitcoin, Hougan identified decentralized finance (DeFi) and real-world asset tokenization as the easiest trade in crypto today. He highlighted protocols such as Uniswap, Hyperliquid, Morpho, and Aave, noting that reasonable valuations combined with fee-switch capabilities and revenue generation give them strong upside potential. In comparing smart contract platforms, Hougan noted Solana's short-term momentum in tokenized equities while reiterating a long-term bullish outlook on Ethereum due to its layer-2 ecosystem and institutional preference.

Addressing regulatory conditions, Hougan estimated the likelihood of legislative clarity passing at under 50%, adding that approval would mark a shotgun start to a new bull market. However, he argued that crypto has reached escape velocity over a two-year horizon regardless of political shifts, supported by ongoing institutional integration from companies like Morgan Stanley and Robinhood. On safety, Hougan recommended staying at the extremes of custody—either utilizing hardware wallets for direct self-custody or relying on fully regulated institutional custodians and ETFs.
